Video Game Addiction
Since 1958, video games have captivated audiences' imaginations. From the humble beginnings of a game of Tennis for Two, created by William Higinbotham, to complex three dimensional graphics which elegantly replicate real life; video games have become an integral part of society (Gettler). Yet, as enjoyable and even beneficial as video games have become, they are now showing a dark side with heavy consequences. Video games have changed from a casual past time, into a consuming habit, which devours the lives of more and more addicts each year. The problem began with unhealthy amounts of time being devoted to video games. It became a culture all its own, with its own styles, catch phrases, and even suggesting life preferences. At first video games were for the socially inept, seeking solace in something that they could excel in. In a report submitted to the APA, the American Medical Association details that researchers have found that people who are most at risk are "somewhat marginalized socially, perhaps experience high levels of emotional loneliness and/or difficulty with real life social interactions. The current theory is that these individuals achieve more control of their social relationships and more success in social relationships in the virtual reality realm than in real relationships"(Goldberg Goff). These gamers seek successful relationships online and take part in one of the newest and most addictive gaming mediums yet: the massively multiplayer online game or MMOG.
The latest addition to video games, the MMOG, is made up of all sorts of games played over the Internet with other gamers. People can play poker, football, first person shooting games, racecar games, or games that are completely immersing called Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games or MMORPGs. In MMORPGs a person creates a character, which they play and use to socialize with other people. This particular genre of online gaming has been the subject of much controversy due to several tragic events. Shawn Woolley of Nashville, Tennessee became obsessed with the online MMORPG, EverQuest. "He played [video games] for about 10 years and had no problem," Shawn's mother Ms. Woolley said. "Then he discovered EverQuest. He just became a different person withdrawn. Socially inactive. The game became the solution to all his problems. He would spend two thirds of his day playing the game. He would stay up all night and play it. He had suffered from ADHD and stopped taking his medication" (Goldberg Goff). In 2001, Shawn committed suicide at the age of 21 (Goldberg Goff).
Recently, another tragic gaming addiction story unfolded involving 15 year old Brandon Crisp. Once a AAA hockey goalie, Crisp had become addicted to an online shooting game titled, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He forsook all other extracurricular activities and only associated with three close friends who also played the game. His parents, frustrated and concerned with Brandon's addiction, took away his Xbox on numerous occasions. Brandon would simply disobey them and find where the gaming console was hidden and resume playing. Finally, Brandon's parents took the Xbox out of their home, to which Brandon responded by running away on October 13th (Campbell Gatehouse ). Brandon's body was found not far from his home on November 5th ("Cops Not Sure" ).
So just what constitutes an addiction? According to the Harvard Medical School Department of Addictions as reported in Ghosh Sabitri's article "Unravelling Addiction," "addiction is the compulsive use of a substance or activity resulting in physical, psychological or social harm to the user; the user continues in this pattern of behavior despite the harms that result." Addiction has long been associated with drugs, alcohol, and gambling, but when the cases of Shawn Woolley and Brandon Crisp are relayed, it is doubtless that these two young men were trapped in their addictions.
However, the two severe cases of Shawn and Brandon are only one facet of the problem of video game addiction. Gamers are not only getting more and more involved in their games, but they are becoming gamers at younger ages. Children under 10 are being appealed to with online games like "Webkinz" which require the child to log on and care for a simulated pet. Even when access to the game is restricted, some children sneak online (Wagner). Parents are now faced with recognizing the elusive symptoms of addiction in seemingly healthy children. Unlike substance abuse, video game addiction is an addiction to something legal, readily available, and socially acceptable.
There are several warning signs that someone is addicted to games. Kimberly Young, who is the director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery in Bradford, PA relates some of the symptoms of video game addiction as: "fantasizing or talking about game characters or missions when offline; lying about or hiding how much time is spent playing or disobeying parental limits; losing interest in sports and hobbies; choosing the game over time with friends; and continuing to play despite plummeting grades, loss of a scholarship, a breakup with a partner. An addicted gamer's physical appearance may also change as he loses sleep, neglects to shower, and skips meals "(Wagner). The presence of these signs calls for intervention. There are several ways to treat video game addiction, though each requires friends and family to intercede.
Because the American Psychiatric Association does not yet recognize video game addiction, getting help for addicted individuals can be difficult. However, video game addiction is similar to other behavioral addictions such as gambling (which is recognized in the DSM IV), pornography or shopping addictions, therefore, it too can be effectively treated through cognitive therapy (Wagner). Addicts are also being treated in centers with others who are addicted to marijuana, cocaine, and those with eating disorders. Some families even send their addicted loved ones to a outdoor based therapy, where they are separated from their computers and televisions for seven to nine weeks (Wagner).
It is clear that many things need to happen to quell this disturbing trend. Families need to be educated about the dangers that game addiction presents, as well as being informed about Should the American Psychiatric Association to recognize video game addiction in the next edition of the DSM, due to come out in 2012, insurance companies would cover therapy. Overall, though, prevention is the best method. Encouraging children to engage in social activities and providing an accepting home with loving, but firm limitations will encourage moderation in all things, including video games.

Top 10 Mass Market Board Games and Card Games of 2003
Top 10 Mass Market Board Games and Card Games of 2003
2003 was a good year for mass market games, which I define as those available in retailers like Toys R Us, Wal Mart, Kmart and Target. These aren't always the "best of the best" but these are the games that the majority of people (Americans, at least) choose from when buying for their family and friends. Here are my picks for the 10 best games published in 2003 and widely available in mass market retailers.
1. Scene It?Movie trivia games have never benefited from players being able to actually see the subject of the questions, until now. In Scene It?, there are eight question categories. Three of them require the included DVD, including watching a movie clip and then answering a related question, and identifying a movie from a single frame in which the actors' faces have been removed. BattleballRoaring good fun for players who won't take it too seriously, Battleball (aka Battle Ball) is a beer and pretzels game light and quick, but with some strategy with great plastic figures representing the football players. Clue FXClue FX or, more fully, Electronic Talking Clue FX, is a great update to Clue. It does away with the die rolling to move from room to room, so you're almost always able to do something on your turn. There are two new suspects, for a total of eight, and they move from room to room (the rooms and weapons are also new). When you enter a room, an electronic "butler" tells you who's there and, thus, whom you can get a clue from. I see this as a definite step up from standard Clue.
4. Break the SafeBreak the Safe is a unique game, as players work cooperatively to deactivate a safe's self destruct mechanism in 30 minutes or less. Players infiltrate the Evil Guy Complex to obtain secret plans. Moving through the EGC, they use each other's tools to disarm booby traps and find four keys while avoiding the guard and dog. Lord of the Rings Risk Trilogy EditionAn edition of this game was published in 2002, but the "Trilogy Edition" is new in 2003. Either one is a good choice for fans of Lord of the Rings who also enjoy strategy games. Transformers ArmadaThe gameplay in Transformers Armada: Battle for Cybertron is based on the fantastic system developed for Star Wars Epic Duels. Each Transformer has its own customized deck of cards, used to attack other players and defend from attacks. The game, almost always a roaring good fight, often comes down to who manages their cards the best.
7. Beat the ExpertsBeat the Experts challenges players to do better than experts did answering the same 10 trivia questions. For example, Dr. Ruth answered questions about sex and Steve Young answered questions about football. In all, the game comes with 150 expert quizzes (1500 questions). Beat the Experts is a terrific new trivia game and should appeal to fans of the genre.
9. Mission Command SeaOf the three Mission Command games published this year (Air, Land, Sea), Sea is the best. Based on the classic game Carrier Strike, Mission Command: Sea is a basic two player naval wargame. Each player has an aircraft carrier, two destroyers, eight fighter jets, and 14 missiles.
10. Harry Potter Halls of HogwartsHarry Potter Halls of Hogwarts is the best of three games from Mattel that were competing for this final slot in the top 10. The other two are Batman Gotham City Mystery and Justice League MegaClash.

What Sakura Haruno to Use as Support
What Sakura Haruno to Use as Support
Almost every element type in the Naruto Trading Card Game either focuses on Attack or Defense, rarely both. For instance, Fire goes towards attack having the strongest early game ninja, same with Lightning, while elements of Wind and Earth seem to drift towards support with ninja like Temari and Shikamaru. Support is important in every deck, no matter what the build and one very versatile ninja is Sakura Haruno, but what copy of her to use? Depending on what type of deck you use in the Naruto TCG I would always try and use a decent amount of support ninja to back up my leaders, it just makes sense. One such support ninja is the Genin Sakura Haruno. She is known for her roll in the anime along side Naruto and Sasuke. One variation of Sakura comes to us from the Dream Legacy expansion of the Naruto TCG
Sakura Haruno (Errand)
Her effect is really good here allowing you to manipulate your hand on both offense and defense. Her stats are a bit weak, but that's Sakura for you. What makes this Sakura good is her versatile effect, 3 mental power, and the fact that she has growth.
Sakura Haruno is not the greatest version of this ninja seeing play today, but I would still give her a fair rating of 3 out of 5.
Here again we have another form of that famed female ninja Sakura Haruno. This version of the pink haired ninja comes to us from the Battle of Destiny expansion of the Naruto TCG. She is still a weak support wind ninja, but let's take a look at how she has grown over the past few sets.
Sakura Haruno (Search for Sasuke)
Valid: While your opponent has "Sasuke Uchiha" in play this ninja gets +0/+2
Ok so she has a really nice effect. if your opponent has Sasuke Uchiha in play. So how likely is that you may ask? Well in reality it's going to happen most every game. Sasuke (Analysis of Competition) and Sasuke (Thirst for Power) are both very good cards that see a ton of play in almost every format so they will hit the table, and when they do, your Sakura gets powered up to a 0/3! This Sakura is great, but still relies on your opponent a bit much which makes it conditional so I score it a fair rating 3 out of 5
So with two average Sakura's reviewed above we need to find one that stands out among the rest, one that will fit in any deck, give some support, not be conditional with her power and help the overall flow of your deck. Well here she is.
Sakura Haruno (A Double Personality)
During the Exchange of jutsu you can exchange all the cards in your hand for the same number of cards off the top of your deck.
Wow! Just wow, does anyone really know how great this power really is? With all the cards that allow you to manipulate your deck, or your opponents for that matter this card will allow you to draw into your really good jutsu. Team her up with Sasuke in the early game and get a nice Chidori to clear the field really quick. Team her up with Zabuza to kill off entire teams in one shot, team her up with just about anyone to wreak havoc and destruction throughout the field, and best of all she's only a rare, making her obtainable to the common player. Sakura (A Double Personality) also comes as a Starter deck rare in the Quest for Power Starter decks so even the newest of players can get their hands on this great card. Overall this Sakura gets my seal of approval (and most everyone else's) earning a perfect 5 out of 5
So overall if your putting together any deck and looking for some decent support you can't go wrong with Sakura, and the Double Personality version of her really is essential in the current play environment. Almost every reliable tournament worthy deck will run a few copies of her to manipulate the jutsu phase and draw, so you should do the same. If you cant run three copies of Sakura (A Double Personality) there are other choices, Search for Sasuke will work well in the current environment, and Errand is a reliable choice all around.

Top 10 Game Stocking Stuffers for 2004
1. Texas Hold 'Em for DummiesThis small book and card deck are an absolute must have for any Texas Hold 'Em Poker beginner. The book is full of concise, practical tips; the card deck has strategy printed right on them to help you learn while playing.
2. TypoThis clever word game is great for those who love Scrabble. Players start with 12 cards (letters) and try to play them on the table in one of four rows so that they can say a word that begins with the letters in that row. Pirates of the Spanish MainBilled as "the world's first constructible strategy game," Pirates of the Spanish Main features cool ships built out of cards so you can fit an entire fleet into someone's stocking. The game itself plays like a relatively simple collectible card game, with pirates exploring for treasure and attacking each other.
4. CodaCoda may require a larger than average stocking to fit in, but if you get it in there, the recipient is likely to enjoy it. Coda is a light 20 minute deduction game that was published in Europe as "DaVinci Code" (as in the book). What's It To Ya?This party game belongs to the same family as Apples to Apples, but it's a unique experience. "hope," "underwear" and "garbage collectors") are placed on the table and each player ranks them in order of importance. (Is underwear more important than garbage collectors?) You win points by matching other players (I think the best way to play is in two player partnerships). Lemony Snicket's Catastrophic Card GameBased on the best selling book series "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," this card game challenges players to create sets and earn victory points. Needless to say, playing this game is not a pleasant experience because it is packed with reminders of the tragic lives of the Baudelaire Orphans.
8. Bang! with Dodge City ExpansionThis game is set in the Wild West, and players try to stay alive while killing their competitors. One player is the sheriff, two are his deputies, and the rest are outlaws but nobody knows who anybody else is when the game starts. Bang! is great fun on its own, but if you can also find the "Dodge City Expansion," released in 2004, it adds some extra excitement.
9. Employee of the MonthThis tongue in cheek card game shares much of its sense of humor with Dilbert. The goal is to be popular with both your fellow employees and management by gathering kudos and brownie points. But you'll also collect suspicions, which are bad. At heart, Employee of the Month is an auction game.
10. Cranium ZigityThis card game from the publishers of Cranium usually plays in about 10 minutes, with the goal of getting rid of all of your cards. The cards themselves are a novelty clear plastic with solid graphics; the clear element actually comes into play during the game. Zigity is a fun, family friendly card game.

online free tarot card readings
online free tarot card readings
Tarot cards, used for nearly five hundred years, originating in Italy, used initially as a card game, but now used for more sinister purposes. Reading tarot cards has become an urban legend in mystic circles, although their history if full of doubt and suspicion, with some tarot cards sets containing 96 cards, where other decks only contain the main 22 trump cards.
Having your tarot cards read, can be a very similar experience to reading your horoscopes, alternative horoscopes, palm reading and any other type of mystic future predictions, you have to believe in them. Like in Nostradamus'stheories and the bible, certain things, may be translated differently for each individual person, it all depends on your perception. And as nearly every persons perception may vary slightly or greatly, each sentence spoken or written may have an average of thirty different meanings.
Tarot card reading is more associated with the occults and the darker side of predicting the future, with many films depicting curses and hellish beasts would rise, from certain fictitious tarot card readers, which is possibly one reason why the tarot cards have become an urban legend. The deck of tarot cards has a death card, like in the usual modern deck of cards we have the ace of spades as a death card, but the death card may not mean death as we know it, it could mean the death of a relationship, partnership or a memory, again, it will only be perceived as we see it.
If you believe in tarot readings, then you are no different to the person who will read his or her horoscopes in the local paper, possibly we all need to believe in something, we all would like an insight into our own future, whether you believe that your life is already mapped out or that we are the creators of our own destiny.
Personally, every aspect of a fortune teller, card reader or even a dream interpreter is aimed at an average audience, meaning that whatever is said, would apply to the larger mass of general people, and not personally for the individual, as predicting certain circumstances for 500 people would only give a more generalised description of a future which may affect some of them, so the card reader would have a better chance of getting it right. With a one to one reading it is harder to generalise, they must be more specific, but can they be right.
This is one of the tarot card love cards, there are many hundreds of different styles as each card varies with each type of deck. A love card, like every other card in the pack has many different meanings, if it is brought up with a death card, some tarot readers may say it is the death of a long lost love, or the death of your relationship now, or the complete death of your husband. Remember, each tarot reader has been taught, usually just by the book they had bought in a shop or online, which are then not actually ways of predicting the future, more like guidelines, so from these guidelines, they have to "suggest" or "guess" as to what future the cards predict for you. Then from this translation in the book, through the card readers own personal translation, you must then translate it into what you want it to mean, or into what you think it means. It is complicated, sometimes you may as well play a game of Chinese whispers, the outcome may be similar.

Personally, most of the readings offered from whichever source, from cards to the bumps on your head and tea leaves, are all down to the believer, or the person who wants to believein something. There is nothing wrong with that, maybe we all do need to believe in something. Allegedly there is no smoke without fire, I had a reading once, from a mystical person, who wore an open necked blouse suit and worked from a small neat office, she predicted my future, told me me past, and took recordings for me to listen to later. I kept as silent as possible during this session, not willing to give away anything, not even believing what she was saying. But she was 80% right, about both my past and my future. It was a shock. But any other reading I have had, have been so far away from what was right, because these were just general readings. Maybe, the original readings I had were from a person who could predict futures or part futures without generalising. If I knew where this woman was now, I would go and see her again.
If you believe in tarot readings, then you are no different to the person who will read his or her horoscopes in the local paper, possibly we all need to believe in something, we all would like an insight into our own future, whether you believe that your life is already mapped out or that we are the creators of our own destiny.

taking card game for two
taking card game for two
Not for nothing is it said that good things come in small packages. Take, for example, the card game Triumvirate, designed by Travis Worthington. The box is about as big as the palm of your hand and contains a deck of 27 cards, along with a collection of 13 wooden, colored disks that are used for game play (three each of red, yellow and black), scoring (three purple) and to remember an individual round's dealer (one green). There is also a durable piece of artwork cardboard, called a 'scoring tableau,' which is virtually useless in terms of actual game play.
Triumvirate is strictly a two player game and puts a unique twist on the general idea of taking tricks. Normally, in trick taking card games like Hearts, a player's objective will be accomplished or not when a trick is taken. In Hearts, for the most part, you're trying to avoid taking tricks. In a game like Rowboat, you want to win as many tricks as possible. With Triumvirate, a trick is not technically won or lost by a player. Instead, the trick is won by a color red, yellow, or black. A 'hand' is played out until one of those colors has won three tricks, at which point, a colored disc (matching the 'winning' color) is placed on the scoring tableau. A round of play consists of a number of hands and ends when one of the colors has three discs in the scoring tableau (in other words, has won nine tricks; each three of which earns that color a disc).
All right, let's back up a little. The 27 card deck consists of three suits (colors), each with nine cards, numbered 0 through 8. If theme is important to you, the red cards represent Caesar, the yellow cards represent Pompey and the black cards represent Crassus. What you're trying, generally, to accomplish in a round of this game is to accurately determine which of these three emperors is going to win that round (be the first to have three matching colored discs in the scoring tableau). If you do so, you receive a purple game scoring marker. The idea is to play three rounds, and win two of them. The purple markers, like the scoring tableau, are sort of superfluous.
At the start, each player is dealt 11 cards. The five that remain are set aside for this opening round of play. The dealer lays out a card of a certain color, and the opponent, operating under the rule that he/she must, when possible, follow suit, plays another. Highest card of the two played wins that trick for that color. The "0" card is a trump card, and, in the parlance of the game, represents the Mob; a civil disturbance. The "0" (Mob) card is the lowest card in its own color, but will win versus any numbered card of a different color. Leading with the Mob guarantees a win for its color, because it will either lose to a higher card of the same color, or win against any numbered card of another color. When two cards of different colors are played (not to include a Mob card), the highest ranked card of the two wins the trick for the higher numbered color. The player who placed the winning trick card leads with the next card.
So, this goes pretty rapidly, and as soon as one color has 'won' three tricks, the hand is over. A colored disk, matching the 'winning' color is placed on the scoring tableau. Now (forgive the pun) comes the tricky part. Once a 'color' has won a hand of play (taken three tricks), players will 'Pledge' one of the cards remaining in their hand. This is accomplished by taking the chosen card and playing it face down near the scoring tableau. During a given round, you will be allowed to Pledge up to three cards this way (one per hand until the maximum of three is reached). Playing a 'Legion' card (3, 5, or 7; any color) as a 'Pledge' is a direct means of achieving victory in a round of this game. Playing any other card as a Pledge Mob, or 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 may fulfill other strategic objectives, but the Legion cards are key.
Cards played in the opening hand are gathered, to include the five initially set aside, shuffled and dealt out again; this time (and in future hands), three are set aside. These hand and Pledge activities are repeated until a color has attained three discs in the scoring tableau. At this point, players reveal their Pledged cards. The player with the highest point total of Legion cards (3, 5, or 7), matching the color of the 'winning' Emperor wins the round of play. He/she takes a purple disc and a second round of multiple hands is initiated.
Game play is really straightforward and rapid; almost silly simple to learn. Figuring out a clear path to victory is a lot harder. Say, for example, you start out with a lot of Caesar (red) cards in your opening hand. You happen to have the 8, 7, 6, 5, and 4, which, at first glance, would seem to give you the opportunity to score a quick victory for red in the opening hand. At most, your opponent has four red cards (3, 2, 1, and 0), all beatable with your cards in that color. But what if he only has two of them (say, the 3 and 2; the other two might be among the five that were set aside initially). If this happens, your opponent is what they call short suited, and though you will win with the 8 and 6 (saving the "7" to Pledge), you could lose playing the 4, because your opponent may have the Mob card of another color or a higher than 4 card of another color, which he/she will play when he/she runs out of red cards in their hand.
For the sake of argument, let's assume you do win a quick victory for red (Caesar) in the opening hand, and in anticipation of winning the round, you Pledge the red "7." Red's got one disc in the scoring tableau now; one down, two to go, and you, with a lot of points (7) pledged to that color. Now, though, the played cards are shuffled, and re dealt, to include the five set aside. If you won the opening hand with three quick tricks for red, you've only got one left in your hand; you played the 8, 6, and 4, and pledged the 7, leaving you with only the five. Now, your opponent sees that red has won the opening hand, and decides to institute other proceedings, designed to give yellow the victory in the current hand of play; or black. Either way, your opponent, in any set of circumstances, is going to be working at odds against your objectives.
The combination of re shuffling and cards that are set aside at the beginning of each hand, make it hard to predict how a given hand is going to play out. Pledging has some subtleties to it, as well. You may think that Pledging a "7" card would pretty much guarantee you the round win if the round is won by the color of the card you pledged, but what if your opponent pledges the "3" and "5" of that same color? (remember: up to three can be pledged each round) Eight beats seven every time. There are lessons to be learned along the way, and it's unlikely that you'll learn them in the first few games of this. If, for example, you do pledge a "7," it might not be a bad idea to hold on to the "3" or "5" in that color (assuming you get them). This would guarantee that your "7" could not be beaten (bearing in mind that only Legion cards 3s, 5s, or 7s count when it comes to determining the round winner).
Short suiting yourself in a hand to gain a 'trick' advantage with either the Mob card or higher numbered card is difficult to do, because in any given hand, there are going to be either 22 (five set aside in the first hand) or 24 (three set aside in later hands) cards in play. Divided by two (players), that's 11 or 12 cards, split among three suits, and normal, random distribution is going to give you three or four of each color. Random distribution doesn't always work out that cleanly, of course. Not to mention the fact that if, by chance, you do end up with a short suit in a given color, it requires the cooperation of your opponent to get that color out there for you to trump.
All in all, Triumvirate is a tricky (again, with the pun) little card game that'll get your brain functioning at a higher level than you expected after someone has explained its simple process. It'll take a time or two (as all good games do) to figure out its subtleties and work towards any sort of winning plan. The components are top notch; good, sturdy card quality, wooden scoring discs, and the cardboard scoring tableau. Rules are fairly straightforward and easy to follow. There are, as noted, some superfluous materials here. The three purple scoring discs are not strictly necessary, nor, for that matter is the green 'who's deal is it?' disc or the cardboard scoring tableau.
Published by Indie Boards and Cards, Triumvirate is recommended for ages 13+ and can be played in about half an hour; a maximum of three rounds. It retails for under $15 in a variety of locations, and can be had for less with a little shopping.
